“Il Museo in tasca”: an application to discover Fisiocritici’s natural collections through mobile devices

Abstract

“Il Museo in tasca” is a free application for smartphones and tablets conceived by Fondazione Musei Senesi to increase access to six museums in Siena province. Accademia dei Fisiocritici contributed to the project by assembling information on its Museum of Natural History in a “virtual pocket guide”, available for download from March 2016. This application is useful for planning visits, finding one’s way around the ancient building and learning more about the exhibits, since showcases contain limited information. The Museum chose to maintain the way objects were displayed in the XIX century, a choice that limits the amount of information that can be transmitted. The application has four sections: “Museum” describes the location and history of the Siena Academy of Sciences; “Themes” indicates the main disciplines (geology and palaeontology, zoology and anatomy) and provides general information on the types and origins of collections; “Objects” describes certain items or collections in detail and explains their scientific value; “Localities” illustrates their provenance: major fossil-bearing outcrops, mining districts or areas of faunistic value. Each section contains texts (available in Italian, English and Chinese), photo galleries and video clips.

Inside-out Modena University Museum collections of geological sciences.

Abstract

On the UN Year 2014 as the International Year of Crystallography, the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences of Modena and Reggio Emilia University (Italy) and its Museum “Gemma 1786”, organized an exhibition named “Cristalli ai raggi X” based on museum collections. The initiative involved the cooperation of many public and private partners and the active participation of twenty schools of different types and levels. A novel aspect was the planned participation of high-school students in the fifty collateral events organized during the exhibition. The main purpose of “Cristalli ai raggi X” was to introduce non-specialists to the world of crystals and their properties. In addition to a wide range of scientific materials sourced from museum collections (minerals, rocks, historical documents, precision instruments) and technological applications, the event also included a variety of cultural and artistic items. The museum collections represented a useful intercessor of science communication and education, entertainment and socialisation. Then, they contributed to trasform the exhibition in a dynamic place of dialogue, amusement and involvment for visitors of different ages and interests.

Abstract

Since 2009 the Museum of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy (MZAC) of University of Modena and Reggio Emilia has been promoting his enthomological collection by means of educational activities focused on insects identification, in collaboration with the international project KeyToNature. Digital dichotomical keys have been developed using pictures from enthomological collections hosted in MZAC, from donations and from other Museums' collections. In particolar we are currently using the “Insects of MZAC” key on tablet during educational laboratories and public events as special opening of the Modena’s Museums, enthomological fair (EntoModena) and expositions. To evaluate the communication efficacy of the keys, we carried out an evaluation with questionnaries and semi-structured interviews, the results of which are reported in this paper.

The "Palm World": some didactical suggestions from the samples of the Historical Carpological Collection of the Botanic Garden of Modena.

Abstract

The revision of the samples of the carpological collection of the Botanical Garden of Modena is in progress. After the Gymnospermae, we took into account the Monocotyledons, about 1/7 of the whole collection. The Monocotyledons samples are ascribed to 21 families, among which the most represented are the Arecaceae (= Palmae), with taxa whose origin zones cover the whole Earth. Due to the great ethnobotanical importance of many palms and their various curious botanical features, we proposed an interdisciplinary didactic itinerary dedicated to the palms, which is suitable for the primary school. Such itinerary, which is articulated in a part to develop in the Botanic Garden and another one to develop in the classroom, is completed by didactic cards and a didactic play. The samples belonging to the Arecaceae are now collocated in the shopcases of the Aula Storica of the Botanical Garden of Modena, as a semi-permanent exhibition which is functional to the itinerary itself.

Museobus: knowing in motion.

Abstract

The need for one side to approach, in cultural terms, the larger urban centers to the marginal realities of a geographic context that is highly fragmented in demographic terms and on the other to create an innovative stump to gather knowledge and finds dispersed on the territory and perhaps they would be lost, leading to the birth of the so-called Museobus. That is, the idea of setting up a van and bringing in contact with various social realities as well as culturally material (and immaterial) beyond the territory it conserves and offers. The slogan “knowing in motion” encloses in a few words the design goals and allows to spread awareness both on the territory and elsewhere.
