The Natural History Museum of Lugano (Ticino, Switzerland)

Abstract

Thanks to Luigi Lavizzari and the collections he deposited, a Cabinet of natural history was founded in 1853 at the local high school, the Liceo cantonale in Lugano. It is only in 1979 that a real Natural History Museum was formed, becoming part of the public administration.
Among the museum’s tasks, particularly important are those related to the conservation of nature in Canton Ticino. The museum has become the reference in the canton for aspects related to natural history. However, while activities and persons revolving around the museum have been increasing, funding and physical space have been diminishing. A solution was found by building a network of partnerships and collaborations.

The Museums of the University of Pavia: management, development and strategies

Abstract

The Museum System of the University of Pavia (SMA), founded in 2005 to support museums in their tasks of scientific research, promotion of culture, conservation, exhibition and increase of collections, consists of several museums and collections. Since its creation the SMA recorded a strong increase of the activities, a growth in the number of visitors and, in spite of the difficult times we are living, even an increase in museum structures that make up the system itself. This model of management was successful, thanks to an effective promotional strategy that has strengthened the concept of “working together” and turned the university museums into opportunities to increase our knowledge and cultural heritage; an alternative use of free time that reaffirms the role of centres of research and teaching in academia.

The exhibition “Science and Sport” for a new public-private museum system in Montebelluna (Treviso, Italy)

Abstract

The Nord-East region is one of the most important economic area in Italy. Here, in the Montebelluna territory, there is the industrial Sportsystem district. In the 1980s, the companies in the district, reunited in a Foundation, had founded the “Museo dello Scarpone”: a unique business museum; it is not only a trademark museum, but in this museum are rappresented also all the major brands of the area.
The economic crisis in 2000 had important consequences for companies, the economic system became in crisis, and also for the museum, with its extraordinary heritage.
Today, the production model has changed, in first due to delocalization; now the problem is choosing how not lose the museum heritage, update and innovate it, and make it accessible to the community.
The Foundation “Museo dello Scarpone” and the Montebelluna municipality chose to experiment a new model of valorisation, which is based on the public-private cooperation. The first action in this direction was the organization of a temporary exhibition titled “Science and sport” in the Montebelluna Natural History Museum: the museum of the municipality. The exhibition is realized with the aim of launching a start-up to rethink the “Museo dello Scarpone”, its identity, to activate innovation processes, that enhance access, enjoyment and promotion of the cultural heritage of Sportsystem.

Work experiences during academic year (alternanza scuola-lavoro): the museum a resource for the school, the school are resource for the museum

Abstract

Work experiences during academic year (alternanza scuola-lavoro) is an important management innovation, both from an educational and an organizational point of view. Museums, as preferred places for acquisition of skills as well as the development of personal growth, have long been interested in scholastic apprenticeships. The new challenge for museums, especially medium/small ones, is now to introduce student apprenticeships programs throughout the three year period and to promote the goals of the school-work apprenticeships. This report aims to outline the outcomes of a project conducted in 2016, together with the local high school. This experience wants to show: 1) how a museum can incorporate school instances by implementing actions that will accommodate a large number of students safeguarding the quality of the experience; 2) how such a commitment is then a resource, enabling the museum to adopt audience development strategies.

The Giardino dei Semplici, Florence’s botanical garden: destruction and rebirth, a perfect example of resilience

Abstract

Resilience is the ability to regroup positively after suffering damage. It is a term borrowed from engineering, where it indicates the ability of a material to regain its original shape after being crushed or deformed. Developing a resilience plan allows a community that suffers from a traumatic event to return to its previous condition, and sometimes to even improve upon it. An example of resilience was implemented by the Museum of Natural History at the University of Florence after the tornado that severely damaged the Giardino dei Semplici on 19th September 2014. The Botanical Garden was struck by what is technically defined as a flash flood, a vortex with a high concentration of energy and water vapour which triggered a whirlwind accompanied by heavy rain and hail. The devastating action lasted for 15 minutes (between 12:40 and 12:55), completely changing the structure of the Botanical Garden. A few minutes after the incident, the first photographs of the disaster were published on the Natural History Museum’s social media profiles, creating a network of solidarity that is still active to this day. The tools that the internet offers proved to be crucial for the future of the garden.
One of these tools, the crowdfunding campaign “Colour in the Giardino dei Semplici”, is based on the idea that a small individual contribution from many people can lead to sums of money being collected that would be difficult (if not impossible) to reach with a single donor. This resilience project allowed the garden to re-open to the public after just six months, with new spaces, new trees, technological innovations, and above all the support and affection of a community that has also grown “thanks” to the tornado.

Thinking beyond parochialism, united we stand, divided we fall: the case of Agno-Chiampo Museum Network

Abstract

Agno-Chiampo Museum Network is a joint initiative undertaken by nine neighbouring towns in the western part of the province of Vicenza, with the purpose of managing more effectively and efficiently the archaeological and naturalistic heritage of the area. The Museum at Montecchio Maggiore is the place in which items of interest found in the whole area are deposited, studied and displayed, functioning as a common Museum for the nine towns. It is also the operating centre in which all the activities (having been previously agreed upon by all partners) are actually accounted for. An example in the field of Natural Sciences is the recent acquisition of a paleontological collection fron the Municipality of Montebello Vicentino. Thanks to the collaboration between the Municipality, the Museum / Museum Network and the Soprintendenza Archeologica the inventory and cataloguing of more than 2600 fossils has been performed. In addition, a temporary exhibition of select natural history items, due to be displayed temporarily through the various municipalities, is currently being assembled in various municipalities to expose part of the natural history collections with the aim of sharing with the people the bustling activity that takes place behind the scenes of the museum. In the field of archaeology, an example of collaboration with the Municipality of the Museum Network and the Soprintendenza is represented by the educational
activities in the archaeological area of Copper Time of Sovizzo, which provides workshops either on site, or in a classroom inside of the Municipality building. A project recently initiated and awaiting funding, involves the construction of a new classroom which also acts as the center of the archaeological visits.
