The valorisation of the museum’s heritage in the creation of a modern exhibition path

Abstract

Among the great cultural heritage of Pavia, the Natural History Museum of the University founded in 1771 by Lazzaro Spallanzani is on of the main ones. In the last few decades the collections have been fully restored with the aim of creating new museum exhibitions that represent an added value for the entire city of Pavia. The University has obtained funds and identified appropriate spaces within Palazzo Botta to host the museum, but it was necessary to transform the ancient scientific and educational collections, organized with the strict systematic criteria of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, into a museological display adapted to the expectations of the contemporary audience. We chose to adopt the idea of scientific voyage as a storyline criterion of the exhibition. Directly connected to this concept is the development of natural history over last three centuries, with the researches of Carl von Linné, Alexander von Humboldt, Georges Cuvier and Charles Darwin.

About the restoration of wax hyoid bone

Abstract

The collection of anatomical waxes “Clemente Susini” of the University of Cagliari, dating back to the early 1800s, despite the historical vicissitudes linked to the two world wars, is one of the best preserved of this kind that has reached us. The 23 models from which the collection is made have not undergone massive damages from crystallization of the wax as happened in other Italian collections. Some details however seem to be fractured and remedied at the least worst in a recent past and in unidentified situations. The restoration of the hyoid bone of “Table X” has been performed as a preventive study regarding the type of materials used for summary repairs and the possible remedies for such interventions to better preserve and enhance the full collection.

Experiences of conservative restoration of two findings of historical interest: the elephants of the Natural History Museum of Pavia

Abstract

We report two different experiences of conservative restoration conducted on two taxidermed elephants: an African elephant without information, in the collection since 1887, and an Asian elephant of great historical value, dating back to 1812, called “Napoleon’s elephant”. Both in serious condition of conservation, they have been subjected to operations of cleaning, consolidation, repair and reconstruction of different anatomical parts. The restorations, which included the improvement of the aesthetic and ostensive aspect, were carried out with different procedures, based on the different historical value. In both cases, however, all operations are reversible. The interventions carried out are reported for an exchange of good practices between professionals and to promote a restoration that respects the present and future value of the specimen.

The conservative restoration of the anatomical collections of the Museum for the History of the University of Pavia

Abstract

The anatomical collection of the University of Pavia dates back to 1772, with the anatomist Giacomo Rezia and was subsequently enriched by Antonio Scarpa, Bartolomeo Panizza and Luigi Porta. The Museum for the History of the University is now located in the same premises that once housed the Anatomical Museum. The Medicine section of the Museum includes instruments, memorabilia and anatomical preparations relating to the second half of the 1700s, to the 1800s and to the 1900s. To stop the physiological degradation of biological specimens, in 2016 began the restoration activities of anatomical preparations. For each preparation were collected all the information regarding the storage conditions and past restoration operations; accurate photographic documentation has been carried out, to make every intervention traceable. The interventions were strictly conservative, aimed at preserving the specimens as they were originally prepared and improving their general conditions of conservation.

Use of osteological findings from the Museum of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia as a comparison collection for historical investigations on Roman Mutina

Abstract

The museum specimens represent a precious comparison material for the identification of other finds. The Museum of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy of University of Modena and Reggio Emilia contains an interesting osteological collection made up of several hundred skeletons and bones belonging mainly to mammals but also to reptiles, birds, amphibians and fish. Several of these finds have been used, together with atlases and scientific publications, to identify the archaeozoological remains of two sites and a tomb in the city of Modena from the Roman period. The study has shown that the most represented animals were cattle, pigs and sheep/goats and that certainly played a primary role for the economy of the town of Mutina. The animals were bred both for food and for the use of secondary products, such as wool, a product for which Mutina was famous throughout the Roman world.
