For a relaunch of exotics in our museums

Abstract

In the past, collections of exotic specimens, often resulting from adventurous hunting in the tropics, were the pride of many museums. Today the acquisition of new collections of this type is increasingly less likely or feasible. However, in addressing the choices imposed by a new sensitivity towards the declining biodiversity, changes in our society should also be taken into consideration, with the presence of families originating from other continents. The recognition of these ethnic and social changes can be a cultural foundation for a recovery of exotics, at least in some of our museums, both in renewed exhibitions and associated cultural proposals, and through a fresh launch of research activity on non-European fauna and flora, possibly with the recruitment of well-trained and qualified curators from other continents.

Keywords
Education vs. research role of collections; exotic specimens; national museum; new citizens; recruitment of curators.

The University Museum of Paleontology and Prehistory "P. Leonardi": dissemination and new technologies to enjoy a museum behind closed doors

Abstract

The Museum of Paleontology and Prehistory “P. Leonardi” was founded in the mid-60s by Professor Piero Leonardi, who aimed to create an exhibition dedicated to university teaching. Over the years, the continuous and growing demand led to a reconfiguration of the Museum for an open enjoyment to a wider and more diversified public. Unfortunately, in 2012 the Museum was damaged by the earthquake that struck the Emilia Romagna region; since then, the Museum cannot be visited while awaiting for the renovation work. Accessibility, involvement and identification are the elements necessary for the museum experience to be fully lived. In order to respond to different fruition needs an integrated enhancement project has been developed, involving the digitization of the collections by new technologies; this attempt to create a virtual and dynamic environment has the dual purpose of allowing consultation to researchers and students and to set up virtual paths for non-academic users.
